Hojoon Owen Lee
In 2002, Owen began collaborating with and importing high quality instruments from workshops and luthiers in China, Korea, and Germany.
Through diligent effort and excellent customer service, Owen has crafted relationships with many well-known violin shop owners across the country. A passionate curiosity to understand the construction facets of violin playing led Owen to an apprenticeship with renowned violin maker and restorer Amos Hargrave in Lawrence, Kansas. Hargrave, a pupil of Rene Morel and former judge of the VSA competition, instructed Owen in violin making as they maintained and restored many fine violins, violas, and cellos from the likes of Antonio Stradivari, Guarneri Del Gesu, J.B Vuillaume, the Gagliano families, and many more. Today, this experience and first-hand knowledge aids Owen in providing accurate and informative appraisals on customers’ instruments. Owen regularly visits Europe to search for hidden gems and the highest quality antique instruments and bows available at auctions and collection sales.
Recent ventures have seen collaborations with renowned French appraisers Jean-Francois Raffin, Sylvan Bigot, Yannick Le Canu, Jean-Jacques Rampal, and Jonathan Marolle. Los Angeles Violin Shop is proud to host these experts yearly at our Authenticate LA event at our Olympic Boulevard workshop for clients and patrons to secure authentication and certifications issued from a panel of world-respected experts.
