Mathias Hornsteiner (Labeled) Violin 4/4

Mathias Hornsteiner (Labeled) Violin

Mittenwald, Germany

Year: 1872

This old German violin has a book matched maple back, displaying fine to medium figuring with deep optics. Ribs and scroll match back. Top is of medium grained spruce. Varnish is burnt umber in color, and on the back was allowed to pool color in the channels around the C bouts while being thinned at the high points of the arching. On the top the varnish looks to have been evenly applied. Antiquing is all genuine from use and wear. It follows case, shoulder and hand wear on the back and ribs. On the top a thinning of color in typical wear areas. As with any instrument of this vintage, there is some edge wear, some accidental dings and staining on the top. All contribute to the life and character of this hardworking instrument. Medium dark boxwood pegs, chinrest, and tailpiece match well with the instrument.
