Description
François-Louis Pique (1758-1822) was a pioneer of the Post-Revolutionary lutherie school of Paris despite being established in the city some years before the revolution itself. His approach was vastly different to that of previous French makers in that he favored the Stradivari models over the Amati or Stainer forms. Pique faithfully followed the arching, form, and red varnish. He commissioned work from his contemporary, Nicolas Lupot, who was working in Stuttgart, but came to Paris himself in 1796. Although ultimately overshadowed by Lupot, the two makers made Paris the most advanced and sophisticated center of violin making in the early nineteenth century.
