A.W. Van Dorston Violin, Chicago 1911

A.W. Van Dorston (labeled) Violin

Chicago, Il

Year: 1911

This handsome violin has a two-piece, book-matched maple back displaying medium thin flaming with good optics. The ribs and scroll match. The top is of fine-, straight-grained spruce. The varnish is a dark caramel color over a light base. Antiquing is genuine player wear. There is some general overall thinning of the color on the top, with some patches where the color has darkened. The back shows an overall thinning of the color. There is one professionally repaired crack on the bass-side lower bout of the top, and another that runs from the bottom eye of the bass-side F-hole to the C-bout.  The violin is built on a Stradivari model, and the workmanship is excellent. Boxwood pegs, chinrest, and tailpiece compliment this handsome instrument nicely.
